🌯 Healthier Frikandel Rolls from the Air Fryer
🌯 Healthier Frikandel Rolls from the Air Fryer
Ingrediënten
- 250 g plain flour (+ a little extra for rolling out)

- 1 sachet dried yeast (7 g)

- 150 ml lukewarm water (or semi-skimmed milk for a slightly softer roll)

- 1 tsp sugar (to activate the yeast)

- 1 tbsp olive oil (keeps the dough supple without adding loads of fat)

- 4 frikandellen (fully thawed on the counter, approx. 1 hour)
- Curry ketchup (choose a 'zero-sugar' or 'light' version if preferred)

- A splash of milk or 1 egg white (for brushing, to add shine)

Bereidingswijze
Mix the dry ingredients
Put the **plain flour**, **yeast**, **sugar** and **salt** in a large mixing bowl and stir briefly to combine.

Knead
Pour in the lukewarm water and tablespoon of olive oil. Knead for 5 to 10 minutes until you have a smooth, elastic dough that no longer sticks to your hands. *(If it is too wet, add a tiny bit of flour; if it is too dry, add a drop of water.)*

Leave to rise
Shape the dough into a neat ball. Return it to the bowl, cover with a clean, damp tea towel and leave to rise for **45 to 60 minutes** in a warm, draught-free place, until doubled in volume.
Frikandellen
Meanwhile, place the frikandellen on the counter so they can thaw fully at room temperature (about an hour).
Pat dry
Take the thawed frikandellen and pat them thoroughly dry with a piece of kitchen paper. This prevents the dough from becoming soggy inside.
Divide
Tip the risen dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Gently knock out the air and divide the dough into **4 equal pieces**.

Roll out
Roll each piece of dough into a long rectangle that is just slightly longer than a frikandel and more than twice as wide.
Fill
Place a frikandel in the centre of a piece of dough. Squeeze a generous stripe of curry ketchup along the length of the frikandel.

Fold closed
Wrap the dough tightly around the frikandel. Press the edges and long seam together firmly (using the tines of a fork if necessary) so the curry does not leak out during baking.

Create the look
Using a sharp knife, make a few shallow diagonal cuts in the top of the dough for that authentic frikandel-roll effect.
Preheat
Preheat the air fryer to **180°C**.
Prepare the basket
Place a piece of baking paper in the bottom of the air-fryer basket. Leave the edges slightly uncovered so the hot air can circulate properly.
Brush
Place the rolls in the basket seam-side down. Make sure they **do not touch** (bake them in two batches if necessary). Brush the tops with a little milk or egg white for a beautiful golden-brown shine.

Bake
Bake the rolls for **10 to 12 minutes**, until golden brown and cooked through.
*Optional:* If the bottoms still feel a little soft or look pale after 10 minutes, but the tops are already perfectly browned, turn them upside down for the final 2 minutes.
⚠️ **Take care with the first bite:** The curry inside can become piping hot in the air fryer. Let the rolls cool for a minute or two before tucking in!
